West Hollywood Community Center integrates a 7,500sf remodel with 12,000sf of new space to provide a unified multi-generational community resource for the City of West Hollywood. The project is uniquely sited in Plummer Park, a well-used urban park with tennis & basketball courts, an active Farmer's Market, playgrounds & sitting areas. The program included restructuring parking to accommodate 110 cars.
The site design strategy began with the idea of a 'car park' that conceptualizes parking as green space for cars and an interest in making the parking lot a demonstration project of environmentally responsive storm water disposal. The ground surface of decomposed granite allows water to percolate to the water table and continuous tree canopy and hedges use landscape to define spaces. A ‘park pavilion’ roof unifies the single story building design. Each end of the building is anchored by one of the two main user groups - seniors and teens.
