The museum has moved to Antrepo No. 5 in Karaköy Harbor, into an old dock building allocated to Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 2009 for the purpose of transforming it into the new home of the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, which was established in 1937. (Photo © Thomas Mayer_Archive)
In a statement from EAA: "Instead of a conventional framework-glass solution for the transparent facade that would cover the work and [protect] it from the elements, we undertook an original system quoting the industrial past of the structure." (Photo © Thomas Mayer_Archive)
That system of projecting boxes that resemble shipping containers is most dramatic at night, when uplighting bathes the corrugated metal surfaces in red. (Photo © Thomas Mayer_Archive)
A sketch by Emre Arolat conveys the contemporary character of the museum, set in contrast to the adjacent Nusretiye Mosque. (Drawing © Emre Arolat)

More than an external statement, the illuminated red surfaces extend inside the museum, even when it is bright outside. (Photo © Thomas Mayer_Archive)
Seen up close, one can grasp that the corrugated surfaces are perforated, meaning the red light is visible through the openings when the ambient light levels are lower than the red light. (Photo © Thomas Mayer_Archive)
A network of walkways and bridges leads in and out of the boxes that house small galleries. (Photo © Thomas Mayer_Archive)
With the insertion of the museum into the formerly industrial building, EAA hopes their design will "form a new, original and fresh center within the cultural landscape of the city." (Photo © Thomas Mayer_Archive)
