The annual commissions are located in NGV's Grollo Equiset Garden in Melbourne. For the inaugural design, John Wardle's firm took inspiration from the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and designed a steel-and-wood structure with 1,350 hand-folded polypropylene pieces that create a colorful canopy for visitors. The arching structure is intended to serve as a shelter for relaxation but also performances and workshops. Opening on September 24th, the installation is on display until 1 May 2016.

NGV's Summer Architecture Commission is the second annual project of temporary architecture launched recently for a Melbourne green space. MPavilion started last year with an installation by Sean Godsell for Queen Victoria Memorial Gardens. This year's MPavilion is designed by Amanda Levete and will open on the same spot on October 5th.
