The Chicago Architecture Center (CAC), formerly known as the Chicago Architecture Foundation, opens today, August 31, which Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has proclaimed as "Chicago Architecture Day."
Although the move north from South Michigan Avenue to East Wacker Drive – in the base of an office building right next to the river and across the way from Norman Foster's Apple Store – was announced about a year ago, the change in name from CAF to CAC came recently, not long before today's opening. If anything, the name puts the focus on the new space, designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, and its prime location just steps from Michigan Avenue, the Chicago Riverwalk and, most importantly, the dock for CAC's popular boat tours.
CAC is celebrating the opening of its two-story, AS+GG-designed space with a long, four-day weekend of exhibits and prizes.

The CAC now charges admission to its exhibits (free for members), but it's free to browse the gift shop. (Photo: CAC, via Facebook)
