Art Deco rooftop garden project
The Shanghai Grand Theatre was built in 1928 as the first movie theater in the East side of the world. With its art deco style, it is a valued historical and cultural asset. In preparation for the Shanghai World Expo 2010, the theatre building was renovated under government direction, including a rooftop garden and restaurants on the top level. The restaurant is named "ARK" (operated by the Maverick DC Group). 1moku was contracted to design an art deco rooftop garden. Complying with the rigorous landscape ordinances and taking them to our advantage, we incorporated the Shanghai cityscape into visual aspects of the design.
