The Swiss architect's design, which was tweaked recently for the report, was praised by Brad Pitt and other LA celebrities who spoke in front of the board on Tuesday. In addition to the EIR certification, the vote by the five supervisors on the board also approves the demolition of four LACMA buildings and the allocation of $117.5 million in county funds for the $650 million building's construction.

Zumthor's LACMA expansion, six years in the making, still needs the approval of the City of Los Angeles, which controls the airspace above the museum. If all goes to plan, LACMA will break ground on the new building in 2020 and open it as early as 2024.
