PLP has unveiled a masterplan and architectural design for a large complex at the heart of a metropolitan centre in the Pearl River Delta. Located at a very prominent junction within the central business district, the project comprises four buildings.
- The Nexus Building – a 600m office and hotel tower
- The Platform for Contemporary Arts – a performing arts complex
- The LZ Park Tower – a 300m office tower
- The Concourse – a large scale retail and leisure facility

The Nexus Building
The best working environments usually have bar or slab configurations allowing plenty of natural light and cooling, flexibility and good connections to the environment. However, a direct transposition of a slab building into a super-high-rise is not possible due to lateral loads and lifting requirements.
Yet if the building leaves away the idea of a single object and instead breaks down into several volumes of the same family, combined to create a solution similar to an outrigger or a tripod, then these problems are eliminated.
The building consists of three components of different heights, organized according to different points of reference. The lower volume, of 44 stories, responds to the park nearby; the middle one is raised to 83 floors and faces the immediate urban context; and the upper component, with a total of 124 stories, is oriented towards the city and mountains beyond.

The Platform for Contemporary Arts
The Platform brings together a modern theatre facility with 1700 seats, a music hall, a multi-purpose performance space and a multiplex. An array of public facilities and cultural retail support and enliven these functions.
In a single metaphorical gesture, the Platform is lifted off the ground freeing up the space underneath for public use. At the same time water is released, cascading back down towards the Park across the street. Through this move, our proposal conceptually links the tower and the park, to create a powerful and unforgettable civic spectacle.

The LZ Park Tower
Located north of the Platform, the third structure in the composition is a 300m tower. The building is articulated as two interlocking volumes orientated along two distinct axes: whilst the lower volume is angled in order to reveal more of the nearby tower in views from the park, the upper volume forms a cantilever that appears to ‘look’ towards the middle of the site, forming a counterpoint to the uppermost wing of the Nexus building.

The Concourse
The Concourse provides the ligament that links together the three buildings in the composition. It consists of a main elevated bridge suspended at 7m above street level as well as a series of ancillary bridges that establish connections to the adjacent mall to the northeast and across the main road to the park. In addition the Concourse will provide an array of retail facilities located adjacent to the Platform.
