Influenced by layers of local history
Leipzig has been renowned for centuries as centre for printing, music, arts, and cultural events – including the world’s oldest book fair. Situated on Nikolaistraße, Aesop‘s first space in this historic city was created in collaboration with Munich-based architecture firm einszu33, with whom Aesop has worked previously on spaces in Munich, Stuttgart and Hannover.
Influenced by a layered history, the 95-square metre interior references the aesthetics, context and subtle meanings inherent in the prefabricated designs that shaped much of the defunct Deutsche Demokratische Republik. Contemporary elements reflective of Leipzig’s post-reunification development provide pleasing contrasts. Within the rough concrete façade, the interior features green- and grey-hued walls lined with shelving composed of powder-coated metal and translucent glass tiles, reflective of the industrial uniformity that characterised Leipzig when Germany’s East and West were demarcated. In striking variation, the point-of-sale counter is crafted from oiled plywood with rounded edges; centrally positioned, it anchors the space and offers an ideal vantage from which to welcome visitors.
