Beijing Image Residential
This residential housing project, located at the corner of the forth ring road and Fucheng Road in Beijing, is the result of a collaboration between Otto Steidle and 9.3 Institute of Architectural Design & Research. Drawing upon influences from traditional Beijing courtyard houses whilst utilising the existing building fabric, the architects deployed the systematic design methodology within the context of the local community to form an open city block.A south-north orientated path was designed as a focal point of circulation for the community, linking key living spaces including the living room, entrance hall, courtyard, semi-public green space and public green space. These sequential living spaces have not only provided residents a new style of living but also represent a new, distinctive architectural building form. The buildings on the north side range from seven to eleven floors. The apartments on the south side of the courtyards are four to five stories high. Additionally the apartments in east-west orientation are eleven to fifteen floors high and provide a good view towards the inner city and the "West Mountains" in Beijing. In this manner the buildings reflect different scales and spatial situations.
