The history of the Baltic Sea spa of Heiligendamm begins in 1793. After a decades-long process of decay, the landmark-protected structures were renovated in 2000 in order to restore what had been one of the most distinguished spa locations in Europe. On the basis of a few drawings and photographs the five historical buildings - the Orangerie, Hohenzollern Castle, Mecklenburg House, the Kurhaus (medical center), and the Grand Hotel - were reconstructed and modernized to create a five-star “Plus Hotel” with integrated spa, wellness, and conference center facilities according to modern standards. In close collaboration with local landmark officials the buildings were completely gutted, leaving only the facades intact.
