Tranquility through Reduction.
This planning in the course of a competition includes the addition of a storey, a base extension, the construction of an underground car park and the renovation of the facade of a hotel. The existing building had several additions over the years and consisted of three building bodies, each with a roof projection. Thus a consistent appearance was missing and the ways inside the hotel were rather confusing.
There was a desire for a reduced, uniform look that would bring the tradition-rich hotel into the modern age without losing its original character.
The guiding principle of the planning process was therefore “calm through reduction”. In the first step, the different roof projections were brought to one level and the building bodies were reduced from three to two. The traditional Montafon house served as the design approach for the facade. By using original materials and a straightforward design, a homage to the characteristic look of this type of building was created. The contrast between the modern wood cladding and the classic white plaster is particularly attractive here. Incisions in the body of the building and generous glazing soften the structure and provide additional light, making the core of the hotel, where the reception is located, appear large, bright and open despite the existing low ceiling height. Care was also taken to shorten the paths within the hotel and make them clearer. A cut in the roof is intended to expose the view of the mountain peak behind the hotel and thus bring the surrounding nature more into focus. The long sides of the hotel will be equipped with balconies and exclusive maisonette rooms will be created on the south side to make the most of the effect of this cardinal point and the light that falls on it.
The entrance area of the hotel is the first impression of the guests upon arrival. For additional recognition value, the roof edge on this side was to receive a pool as an eye-catcher. Since the hotel already has a wellness area in the basement, a thematic division was decided: the pool area in the basement was rebuilt and, with an attached weight room, now functions as a sports recreation and leisure area. The newly planned pool on the roof will become part of a wellness area that invites people to relax.
The underground parking garage is also intended to function as a deliberate design element. Through clever planning and generously landscaped areas, both the parking deck and the underground garage fit elegantly into the landscape and do not neglect the idea of sustainability.
Thanks to the straightforward and reduced design, the building now radiates calm and appears modern without losing its originality.
