Complete Renovation of a 1950s House
Nestled in the residential settlement 'Globus-Heimeli,' built in the 1930s, the newly created single-family house in Zurich-Albisrieden boasts a unique location. The spacious plot is surrounded by two streams and numerous trees, placing the residents in a green oasis within the city. However, the original construction of the house did not fully capitalize on this exceptional setting.
Raumtakt was commissioned to undertake the renovation and total refurbishment of the property on Triemlistrasse. The challenge in renovating the single-family house built in 1952 was to create a contemporary and sustainably functioning spatial solution. The reconfiguration of rooms, originally constructed in the 1950s, resulted in more living space through a clever utilization of the available space.
The removal of two load-bearing walls created new areas that corresponded to the modern symbiosis of living and cooking. To support the loads, two steel beams and a column were introduced, cleverly designed to make the entire area appear more open. This newly created space also features a multifunctional, custom-made piece of furniture that encases the load-bearing structure. The furniture can be used differently for the kitchen, the entrance area, and the living room on three different sides. The concept of discreet integrated storage solutions runs throughout the entire house.
By generously opening the house to the garden and the strategic use of a Swedish stove, the house acquired a modern yet cozy touch. The use of the "elements" fireplace from the German provider Skantherm brings multifunctional design possibilities.
The furniture can be quickly and easily repurposed for various needs, such as hosting guests, using entertainment devices, or rearranging the space. The Swedish stove is complemented by a specially crafted piece of furniture that can be used differently based on requirements, providing the room with a constantly changing orientation and shape.
With the renovation and overall refurbishment, Raumtakt Architects not only created a modern and practical spatial solution but also carried out a complete overhaul of the building technology for energy efficiency. The heating, plumbing, and electrical installations were adapted to current conditions, compactly housed in a single room. This resulted in an entirely new floor heating system, the elimination of cold bridges, and the installation of new windows. Additionally, pipes for the future solar thermal system were laid.
The renovation on Triemlistrasse exemplifies how a house can be reimagined and inhabited anew with integrated storage options, practical elements, and clever spatial partitioning. The repurposing of spaces within existing structures is a focal point for Raumtakt.
