Science Park Linz Component 3
Exactly seven years after the Europe-wide architectural competition, the completion of the third building section of the Science Park completes the new, ultra-modern, technically well-equipped and architecturally spectacular campus center of the Johannes Kepler University in Linz. The only thing that remains open is the final completion of Building Section 4.
But even without this building component of the future, the university now has a total of almost 45,000 m2 of additional gross floor space above ground for teaching and research, 15,000 m2 in the just-completed Building 3 alone.
As with the previous ones, the play of kinks in the floor plan and section of the building's structure, outer shell and interior spaces continues seamlessly in this third component.
In contrast to the existing buildings, the base floor accommodates not only the usual special classrooms for research purposes or seminar rooms and entrance hall, but also lecture halls and a smaller branch of the cafeteria. As in the previous buildings, two parallel wings rise from the base, housing offices and laboratories on 6 floors.
The main identity-forming feature of the interior continues to be the intersecting interior atriums with generous glazing and spatially open areas as centers of communication.
The connecting element of all new building components is a generously dimensioned flying roof, which extends through the entire science park site from building to building and, together with the special room facades and the rear seating staircases, creates open-air auditoriums that can be played in - once again a place of encounter and communication.
