The street space between the Fishing halls of the 1930s is closed via a new, third hall which unites the historic structures to one new museum ensemble. The hall that is orientated to the new outdoor square now houses the new entrance. From here one gains access through to the former street space of the Ohlroggestrasse which, with its new roof encloses the exhibits in both longitudinal building forms and is transformed into the central circulation, experience and exhibit space of the new museum. Following the principle “house within a house” a conference and assembly room is set in the West end of the hall. This can also be accessed through the side entrance and may be used outside the usual opening hours. The museum is divided in accordance with the building structure into three main areas. In the historic halls, individual exhibit themes are assigned separate rooms. The new glass hall unites these spaces and provides an internal as well as external orientation. In this way, multilayered exhibition paths can be created that interplay with the tall glass hall and the capsule cabinets. A designated play area for children supplements the museum exhibits and provides a space for an alternative experience. The museum pedagogy department is also provided with its own spaces. The concept requires only a minimal intervention with the existing substance, reduces costs and maintains the original feel of typical industrial architecture. Matching building and energy concepts see to it that the museum is run economically sustainable.
