The site of a former tram depot provided a plot for developing a residential area in a central location of Braunschweig. The urban design framework with constraints concerning material and volume was determined in an architectural competition. Each piece of the pilot project was realized by a group of three to six individual families acting together. This group developed three basic floor plans according to their individual needs: small house for a couple, compact house for a big family, town house with a studio etc. The town houses are terraced to allow for privacy on roof top gardens. The back yard is used for games and gardening.
