Given the modest budget for this house for a couple and their young daughter, we attempted to create maximum impact with subtle yet unexpected appropriations of form, proportion and scale. Large windows in the living room, as well as skylights in the foyer and second-storey bedrooms brighten interiors and help the house to breathe, easing the warm temperatures in the Gunma Prefecture. Curves in the western elevation and plan break the regularity of the massing, which we cladded entirely in black galvanised steel. Internally, assorted volume heights enliven the day-to-day experience of space. Little idiosyncrasies such as this contribute to a dynamic spatial narrative.
