The Roman Museum is located within the Archeological Park Xanten, which is deemed to be one of the most important archaeological finds in northern Europe. The new museum completes a series of buildings that were erected in the 1990s.

In concept, GATERMANN + SCHOSSIG’s new building seeks to convey the proportions and scale of an ancient Roman basilica that previously occupied the site through a distinctively contemporary use of form and materials. Within, the sheer scale of the enclosure is enhanced by a series of dynamic platforms and ramps bearing exhibitions spaces and access routes that are suspended from the ceiling, appearing to freely float in space. The building’s structural steel columns are conceived as oversized box frames which create an imposing sense of enclosure immediately upon entering the building; however, as visitors move through the space a series of glazed elements – suspended glass panels designed by the artist Thomas Weil – are revealed, introducing a welcome sense of transparency and flooding the interior with natural light. The exhibits are organised as a timeline which allows visitors to explore Roman life in Xanten by starting on the ground floor and chronologically winding its way upwards and through the building.
