A pair of tree-covered towers in Milan, a refurbished university building in Budapest, housing for students in Brazil, and a school of music in Tokyo are the four projects in the running for the second annual RIBA International Prize.
The five-member jury* (all architects, it should be noted) selected the four finalists from a shortlist of 62 projects announced at the end of last year. The winner will be revealed later this year after the jury visits each of the finalists, a distance of some 16,800 miles (27,000 km) between the far-flung building locations.
The four finalists (click links for more information on RIBA's website):
- Bosco Verticale in Milan, Italy, by Boeri Studio
- Central European University - Phase 1 in Budapest, Hungary, by O'Donnell + Tuomey
- Children Village in Formoso do Araguaia, Brazil, by Rosenbaum + AlephZero
- Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, Japan, by NIKKEN SEKKEI
The 2018 RIBA International Prize is the second iteration of the prize formerly known as the Lubetkin Prize (that was limited to RIBA members outside the EU, while its replacement is open to qualified architects anywhere). The inaugural winner of the prize was UTEC - Universidad de Ingeneria Y Technologia by Grafton Architects with Shell Arquitectos.
