Stockholm Central Station is Sweden's busiest train station with over 250.000 passengers a day passing through this major transport hub. A comprehensive refurbishment and redevelopment programme began in 2008 coinciding with the need to reinforce the old station's building foundations.
Since Stockholm Central Station is a historically significant building protected by a preservation order, the development plans for the project required both care and respect. Our goal was to preserve and highlight the building's fine qualities, while at the same time create a modern travel centre and attractive meeting place. Travellers and visitors should perceive the station as a safe and pleasant environment.
The project comprises a gross floor area of 25,000 sqm and constitutes a substantial upgrade of the passenger environment, with improved retail space, accessibility and comfort. Approximately 3 900 sqm of new lettable retail area has been created through excavation in the basement and a number of extensions to the existing building.
Improved services, a wider range of concessions, and new restaurants have been incorporated in the design. Orientation within the station has been improved, with a new concourse at basement level and new vertical communication. Expanded capacity, and logistics have also been improved both internally and externally with a new loading dock to the station's south service entrance.
Environmental benefits and energy savings are an important objective in the development of the building. Energy consumption has been reduced by at least 25 per cent enabling the station to be certified as a ‘Green Building’ by the Sweden Green Building.
Stockholm Central Station was shortlisted to Årets Stockholmsbyggnad (Stockholm Building of the Year) and ROT-priset 2015 (Refurbishment Project of the Year)
