Big Week for BIG

At left, architect Bjarke Ingels is showing Frank Jensen, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, what makes the Amager Bakke Waste-to-Energy Plant so unique: it is topped by a ski slope. The project just broke ground on the outskirts of Copenhagen, in an area with factories on one side and housing on the other. BIG addresses this edge condition by "re-branding the factory" with a recreational amenity for the public.

In the same week it was announced that BIG is designing the LEGO Brand House in Billund, Denmark, where the toy company is headquartered. No images have been released, but Architect Magazine quotes Ingels as saying, "It's going to be looking at LEGO from all its different aspects—LEGO as an artform, its cultural impact," and "I've been meeting with these AFOLs [Adult Fans of Legos] and I've been learning quite a bit about LEGO. It will be the best museum ever."

See our Studio Visit to BIG's NYC office for more current projects and information on the office.
