Rick Mather was born in Portland, Oregon, and headed to London in 1963 to study at the Architectural Association. He stayed in London and established a practice in 1973 after working for Lyons Israel Ellis and as a municipal architect. It took another ten years for Mather's career and practice to take off, and in the ensuing decades he crafted many buildings and interiors with a sensitive modernism that attracted institutional clients. Following from this, his most well known project is the Ashmoleon Museum in London, which opened in 2009 and was shortlisted for RIBA's Stirling Prize (Building of the Year) in 2010. Mather died from mesothelioma and leaves a partner, David Scrase. With a number of projects underway, his colleagues will continue the practice under Mather's name.
