2013 AIA Institute Honor Awards Announced

The American Institute of Architects has announced the 28 recipients of its honor awards in architecture, interior architecture, and regional & urban design, culled from over 700 submissions. The full list can be found at the AIA web page. Winners will be honored at the AIA 2013 National Convention and Design Exposition in Denver. A few of the winners are highlighted at left and below, with some comments from the jury.

Centra at Metropark, KPF
"This project is an excellent example of the value of creatively reusing existing buildings and their embodied energy in lieu of tearing down and building new."

Milstein Hall, OMA
"The dramatic insertion of the new program in relationship to the existing buildings and site creates exciting new conditions while posing a series of creative opportunities for future uses and artistic additions by the college (some already underway)."

National September 11 Memorial, Handel Architects
"It is profound, and profoundly good with many successful features which include maintaining the building footprints, using water to evoke the motion and power of the towers’ collapse, and also using water and landscape to symbolize the continuity of life."

Saint Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Church, Marlon Blackwell Architects
"The project makes the most with the least, displaying deep resource efficiency as an integral part of its design ethos—something more architects should be thinking about and practicing."
