Developers Saif Sumaida and Amit Khurana have unveiled a rendering of the 35-story, 80-unit residential tower that Pritzker Prize-winning, Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza is designing for 611 West 56th Street in Manhattan.
Sumaida+Khurana is the team also responsible for 152 Elizabeth, a seven-story residential building in Manhattan's Nolita neighborhood designed by fellow Pritzker winner Tadao Ando. Working with real estate firm LENY on the 56th Street project, Sumaida+Khurana have staked out a particular, high-design niche with their first two developments: both projects are the first ground-up buildings in New York City for the famous architects; for Siza, it is his first ever building in the United States. 611 West 56th Street will be only the second tower for Siza, who realized the 45-story New Orleans tower in Rotterdam, the second tallest building in the Netherlands.
As in Sumaida+Khurana's project on Elizabeth Street, Gabellini Sheppard is serving as interior designer on the West 56th Street tower. Construction of Siza's tower will commence later this year with a planned completion of 2019.
