Rome REgeneration Foundation Competition Deadline Approaches
Rome is starting again, redesigning its "eternity" and making itself attractive to national and international investors. The capital city is seeking solutions and proposals for new visions that point toward growth and urban development, to build a database of innovative projects on urban regeneration. First prize is 130,000 euros.
A starting point of the initiative promoted by the Rome REgeneration Foundation occurred in March at MIPIM 2025, where it first presented the Call for Ideas “A Vision for Rome”: an international ideas competition aimed at promoting innovative projects for the future of the Capital.
The call was created with the intention of responding to the needs of a community increasingly focused on issues such as inclusiveness, sustainability, and quality of life. The initiative aims to gather innovative ideas to build and disseminate a new integrated vision of the city, taking into account the contributions, skills, and professionalism that play a crucial role in society and are oriented toward harmonious growth.
Foundation president Gianluca Lucignano explained the initiative as a whole. The call, sponsored by the Regional Government of Lazio and the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, is aimed at multidisciplinary teams composed of university professionals and researchers, experts, and representatives from civic groups, with a mix of skills that include: architecture, urban agronomy and botany, anthropology and sociology, economics, mobility and urban technologies. Subjects should be able to offer new imaginaries of urban development promoting the well-being of citizens and the regeneration of the city. The competition was officially launched by the Foundation on April 16 at an event in Rome, and those interested have until June 10 to submit as part of the open call.
Once selected by a panel of experts, six projects will be awarded at the second Rome REgeneration Forum, scheduled for early 2026. The first prize will be 130,000 euros; the second will be awarded 70,000; and the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth places will each receive 25,000 euros. In addition to this, there will also be special mentions for innovative solutions in two areas: “Mobility, Transportation and Urban Regeneration” and “The Tiber as a Flywheel for a New Rome.”
At the presentation of the competition in March, Gianluca Lucignano reiterated the objective that drives the initiative: “In this specific historical period where Rome is attracting great interest from numerous investors, we have decided to open a dialogue with top experts across various sectors to contribute fresh ideas that will accelerate the city's revitalization. This competition will allow us to select the best proposals that presenting a comprehensive vision for the city's development, offering innovative, multidisciplinary solutions focused on people and enhancing Rome’s attractiveness on an international scale.”
