Sleeping at the Bauhaus

The Studio Building at Walter Gropius's iconic 1926 Bauhuas Dessau in Germany has been converted into a hotel that, since October, features rooms fitted with original period objects and furnishings. The 28 flats used to house, per the Bauhaus, "junior masters and promising students" like Josef Albers, Erich Consemüller, Herbert Bayer, Franz Ehrlich, Walter Peterhans, Hannes Meyer, Joost Schmidt and Marcel Breuer. The chance of staying in the modern masterpiece may be appealing, but the historical stature of the building means that dormitory-style touches like communal restrooms and showers down the hall from the rooms are intact—a small price to pay for sleeping "like a Bauhausler."
