International Urban Planning Competition
The city of Ulaanbaatar, despite its relatively small size of occupying only 0.3% of Mongolia’s entire territory, has become a significant hub of economic activity and human settlement. It accommodates 50% of the total population, 66% of the gross domestic product, 61% of healthcare facilities, and 96% of universities and colleges in the country. However, the concentration of people, resources, and industries has led to various social, economic, and environmental challenges, including an increase in disaster risk. Consequently, there is an urgent need to build a new city to address these issues and ensure sustainable development in the region.
The "New Kharkhorum" International Master Planning Competition is conducted in three phases: registration and pre-qualification, the preliminary contest, and the final contest. The development of the overall plan for "New Kharkhorum" has garnered significant interest from the global design community, with a total of 428 teams from 54 countries registering for the competition. Following the initial selection process, 36 teams from 18 countries, including Mongolia, China, Russia, Japan, the United Kingdom,Australia, have been shortlisted to participate in the final round.
Amidst fierce competition, 36 teams conducted individual presentations and reported on their projects. Following a meticulous evaluation by an international jury comprising eleven experts from the United States, Germany, South Korea, Poland, Mongolia, and other nations, top five awards were determined.
This process not only demonstrated the passion and creativity of urban planning professionals worldwide but also reflected the extensive international attention and profound impact of the New Kharkhorum City Planning International Competition.
