In news that seems too mind boggling to be true, road crews in Belize pilfered rocks from a 2,300-year-old Mayan pyramid to crush and use as road fill. What took many years to build with primitive tools was summarily destroyed in part by backhoes. The Nohmul is considered one of Belize's largest Mayan pyramids, and was also damaged in the 1940s for similar ends. According to the BBC, "Prosecutors said they were considering bringing criminal charges against the construction company."
