Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, spoke with PLANE—SITE in the second of three videos being released before the European Cultural Centre's Time-Space-Existence exhibition that opens in Venice in May.
Known for monumental "new towns" with Classical motifs, overscaled housing projects inspired by vernacular Catalan buildings, and the conversion of a cement factory into his home and studio, Ricardo Bofill is an architect whose proclivities have gone in and out of fashion. Following advice on scale and words on the pleasure of space, Bofill says in the film that Classical architecture "will come back" after he dies. And while his belief in a work surpassing his lifetime has changed, it's hard to look at his buildings and not see them as monuments for future generations.
