Gallery TOTO is located in the Sky Lounge WA in the departure area of Narita Airport Terminal 2. It is both a showroom for TOTO, the leading Japanese toilet manufacturer and a public toilet.
We wanted to get away from the perception of toilets as closed and dark environments, where you rarely can see beyond the entrance area, and where you are confronted with a series of terraced stalls.
So, we approached the gallery as a clear glass box, subdivided into ten individual elements. Each of the ten toilet rooms is perceived as an independent unit in an open and bright space where one could see in and out.
Working with low-res LED panels behind fabric screens, each wall facing the lounge space becomes a digital screen suggesting what was going on inside each individual toilet. A twenty minute performance of silhouetted happenings in the toilets was choreographed. From dance parties to cleaning; water droplets to coloured waves.
