[T-room] is a project with the theme of treating the back side as the front side using reflection. It is a renovation of my family home in Kamakura, Japan.
The ceiling is rarely designed in a house, but it takes up a large visual area when standing or lying down, and is one of the most important elements in the space. Therefore, in this project, which aims to play a role from the living room to the bedroom, we tried to treat the ceiling, which is usually like a back, as a front by using the shape, material, and lighting. The shape of the flat ceiling was made to match the slope of the roof, and the material was a wool-based insulation material that has little effect on health even if it falls from the gap, covered with fine stainless steel mesh, and the lighting was a U-shaped upper light made of stainless steel material processed to match the size of the beams, and the stainless steel mesh covering the insulation played the role of a reflector. In addition, the flat area that corresponds to the underside of the attic floor is made of 2B stainless steel plate with an impressive blurred reflection, which is fastened with screws. The floorboards are wide, and if there are as few joints as possible in the longitudinal direction, the space feels spacious. However, wide flooring materials are usually expensive. So I decided to use 2x12 lumber, which is wide and long, as the flooring material. I still admire the carpenter who laid the boards to fill the entire width of the room in the longitudinal direction. In addition, I planned to use 2B stainless steel plate for the covers of the reinforcing beams, the backs of the desks and low tables, the bookshelves, and the handles of the doors to create a soft, repeated reflection of light that incorporates the surrounding scenery. The matte white painted walls accentuate the reflections.
