The newly developed nursing home is located in St.Moritz close to the lake.
The nursing home combines care rooms, age-appropriate apartments, and a public restaurant with an outdoor area, offering a versatile living environment for those in need of care and individuals who wish to live independently while using the home’s facilities.
The lighting design’s main objective was to support the architecture in creating a welcoming and functional environment, balancing the diverse needs of the residents. Key goals included promoting orientation through dynamic lighting, creating calm, restful areas, and adding character through focused accents, all while fostering a sense of community and security.
SOLUTION APPROACH
The lighting concept for the Du Lac nursing home was developed with a focus on both functional and emotional needs, enhancing spatial quality and aesthetics. Emphasis was placed on vertical surfaces in central areas to improve the visual structure of the spaces and make them easier to navigate. This approach enhanced the perceived spaciousness, making the environment more inviting and helping residents find their way.
Dynamic lighting was incorporated into the circulation areas, aiding orientation while adding a vibrant and lively atmosphere. This balance between functionality and character helps keep the spaces engaging while serving their practical purpose.
Lighting was also used to connect and define different areas, particularly in the ceiling design. Lighting elements were integrated with ceiling panels and acoustic solutions, resulting in a visually cohesive and harmonious environment. The interplay between light and architecture formed a key design feature that contributed to the overall sense of unity in the nursing home.
In the inner courtyard, daylight was complemented by an decorative light installation with pendant lights, adding a unique character to the space. It opens up the view to the outside and creates varied perspectives through the building along the corridors. In the communal areas, a calm and harmonious lighting design promotes relaxation and well-being. Soft, even illumination and well-chosen color temperatures created a comfortable atmosphere conducive to social interaction and rest, while also meeting the needs of the residents.
The lighting design for Du Lac carefully balanced practical needs, like orientation and safety, with emotional and aesthetic goals, creating spaces that feel both functional and welcoming. The concept reflects how lighting can improve the quality of life by enhancing the architectural vision and fostering a sense of belonging. The result is a nursing home that doesn’t just provide care, but a warm and vibrant environment where residents can feel truly at home.
