One day Robert Bezeau, a Canadian transplant living on the island of Bocas Del Toro in Panama, woke up from a dream and decided to build an entire village out of plastic bottles. A short film goes behind their construction and features a couple getting ready to move into the first plastic-bottle home.
Bezeau designed the houses so the walls are made from air-filled (not crushed) plastic bottles placed in wire cages, then covered in stucco. The bottles serve as insulation in the warm climate, while even doubling as floatation devices in the event of a tsunami. Bezeau admits it's a crazy idea, but a necessary one due to the tremendous amount of plastic not being recycled and therefore ending up in the oceans.
