Michael Brand, director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, gives a tour of a historic oil tank that has been repurposed as part of SANAA's Sydney Modern project opening December 3.
Built during World War II, the preserved oil tank, which would have held 6 million liters of oil, is an impressive 7-meter-high space supported by 125 columns. As The Tank, the space has been preserved to the condition it was found in, minus the fact one column was removed to insert a spiral stair in steel whose white finish contrasts with the dark space. This element designed by SANAA hints at the white and light building above.
