Staircase installation
London, Great Britain
The illuminated feature on the staircase of this London town house is nothing if not bold. It gives the invisible – the stairwell itself – a solid form and makes it tangible. The stairway winds its way up the storeys around the unique structure. The installation is the answer to the family’s requirement for adequate safety. The design is inspired by the trellis-work typical of homes in the area. The element’s design utilises a two-coloured, sprayed and perforated MDF panel. During the day, the sculpture is bathed in natural light from the side windows. At night, it takes on the role of a lantern, with orange-coloured light emanating from the perforations and casting captivating shadow patterns on the walls.
